Team USA overwhelmed New Zealand 98-71 to win their third game of the FIBA World Cup. The undefeated USA were led once again by their frontcourt. Kenneth Faried and Anthony Davis combined for 36 points on 14-for-22 shooting, plus 20 rebounds.
In the backcourt Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 24 points. Derrick Rose struggled once again, with three points on 1-for-6 shooting. He has yet to find his rhythm in the tournament.
It was 27-20 after one quarter, and the Americans were ahead by nine in the second before a 12-0 run, featuring seven points from Irving, made it 50-29 on Faried’s follow shot with 4:14 left
Team USA built a 22 point lead at the half and was actually outscored by one point in the third quarter. Seemingly cruising from that point they led by as many as 34 points.
Team USA faces the Dominican Republic on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Dominican Republic lost to the Ukraine on Saturday and beat New Zealand on Sunday.
“It was a good, solid performance,” U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “I thought the intensity was excellent.”
