The defense for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals suffered a huge blow on Monday when Darnell Dockett their defensive tackle sustained an ACL tear to his right knee at a training camp practice.
On Monday night, Dockett twitted his thanks for the well wishes. He said the road to recovery would be tough, but he has experienced worse.
After Dockett lay on the ground for some time, holding his right knee and rocking in pain, he was carted from the field. Later following an MRI exam, the team officially confirmed he had torn his ACL.
Dan Williams the team’s nose tackle said Dockett’s foot was caught on the ground, while describing the incident as something that just happens and is part of the game.
After Docket was carted from the field, Ed Stinson a fifth round draft pick this year and Frostee Rucker a veteran ran reps with the Cardinals first team.
Kareem Martin a fourth round draft pick will be asked to take reps in certain defensive packages.
The loss of Dockett, a Pro Bowler three times, is a huge blow to Arizona’s defense that is already reeling from the loss in free agency of Karlos Dansby at linebacker and Daryl Washington at linebacker due to a season long suspension for substance abuse violations.
Tyrann Mathieu the team’s free safety will help the defense when he is taken off the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday and starts practicing on Wednesday.
However, Dockett was critical to the hopes of the Cardinals.
Former teammates, opposing players and others tweeted messages to Dockett for a speedy recovery.
Dockett still has two years remaining on his current contract but some have thought this could be his last at Arizona due to how much his contract will hit the salary cap at $9.8 million next season.
If that is the case, with his injury, Dockett may have already played his last game as a Cardinal.
