Updated: August 30, 2014
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles travel to face their in state opponents the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Davis Wade Stadium. Southern Mississippi really struggled last year as they went 1-11 and finished last in Conference USA. Luckily the only part of the Golden Eagles that succeeded will return for this seasons campaign with a year of experience. Mississippi State got off to a disappointing loss to Oklahoma State in their opener, when they only scored three points. Luckily things got better and they won their last two games in overtime to get to 6-6 and defeat Rice in their bowl game 44-7. The Bulldogs will want to continue that success for the new season
Keys for the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles:
- Nick Mullens will take over the starting QB jobs alone this year. Mullens had more interceptions then touchdowns last season at 14 and 13 respectively. These numbers will have to improve if Mississippi state wants to win more then one game.
- Mullens’ favorite target last year Markese Triplett returns with four touchdowns and 558 yards already under his belt. Triplett will need to help his quarterback and get open when he has to scramble.
Keys for the Mississippi State Bulldogs:
- Junior QB Dak Prescott had 1940 yards and 10 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. He also led his team in rushing with 829 yards and 14 touchdowns rushing the ball. Dak really improved last season and if he has improved for this season then the Bulldogs will be in for a treat. We will see what improvements, if any, have occurred in game one.
- Senior Jameon Lewis was Prescott’s favorite receiver from last season, and he will certainly be a formidable target in 2014. Last year he had 64 receptions, 923 yards, and five touchdowns, all team leading numbers. Lewis is excellent at reading when the QB is scrambling. He will find a way to get open.
